What is Digital Communication and How is it Related to Education?

Following the introduction of cell phones and computers into mainstream society, texting, instant messaging, and emailing became a primary method of communication for many individuals. Digital communication refers to the use of such devices to send information electronically. With the advent of digital communication came a new set of rules to guide social interactions through technology. These rules are collectively referred to as "netiquette".
Students and teachers frequently use technology in the classroom to enhance learning, and they also use it as a means of communication. It is important that teachers model appropriate use of digital communication and correct their students when they use technology inappropriately. This is a lifelong skill that is useful in all aspects of an individual's life, both personal and professional, and therefore it is important that students learn the proper way to communicate using technology.
